When a child is quiet, we are quick to describe them as shy. However, our Los Feliz speech therapy office believes in more than that. Labeling children can cause them to see their quietness as a negative quality. Here are some helpful ways to support an introverted child.
1. Appreciate your child’s needs
Socializing and being outgoing can take a lot of energy out of an introverted kid. Sometimes, your child might want some quiet time alone. It is important to be understanding of your child’s needs and allow that alone time. Validating their feelings is important to make sure they feel understood and not like something is wrong.
2. Be supportive
Be encouraging when your child has made an effort to socialize. Even small steps that we feel are easy can be difficult for an introvert. Help your child understand that sometimes everyone can feel nervous to talk to others and that it’s normal.
3. Don’t be pushy
Taking small steps is the pathway to growth. Find the line between encouraging and pushing your child. Praise the steps they take, but don’t push them to be a part of a situation they are not ready for.
4. Know the tips and tricks
Teach your child little ways to interact and feel comfortable talking to other people. Practice introducing yourselves to each other so your child can get comfortable shaking hands or meeting new friends. Talk about ways to meet other children on the playground or at school. Some quiet children have extroverted friends, but some may connect better with other kids who are quiet too. Teaching them to ask others questions and make eye contact can give them more confidence when meeting other kids.
5. Talk about feelings
Talk about your child’s feelings and how to express them. Validate the feelings and be understanding. Discuss appropriate behaviors for expressing those feelings. Encourage your child to journal about or draw emotions for you if they have trouble expressing them out loud.
